Chelan Bay Marina Opened Loud. The Boat-Storage Fix Landed Quiet, A Year Later.

Chelan Bay Marina Opened Loud. The Boat-Storage Fix Landed Quiet, A Year Later.

In July 2025, Chelan Bay Marina threw the kind of grand opening a boat brand throws when it wants you to notice. Wake surf demos ran from 12:30 to 5 in the afternoon at 101 Bass Lane, then the evening turned into live music, local wine, and lakeside food while guests took turns behind the wheel of a Nautique and a Cobalt. It was a good party, and it announced something real: Seattle Boat Company had brought a boutique marina to downtown Chelan, on 290 feet of waterfront, with boat sales, rentals, and a pro shop attached.

None of that solved the problem most Chelan boat owners actually have. That fix showed up thirteen months later, in a routine blog post with no party attached to it, and it addresses a completely different person than the one the 2025 launch was built for.

What Actually Opened At 101 Bass Lane

Read the fine print on what Chelan Bay Marina is, and it becomes clear who it serves. The facility carries five exclusive transient slips. Five. That is a boutique number by design, not an oversight, meant to keep the dock uncrowded for people renting a Cobalt CS23 Surf or a Nautique S23 for the day, or for out-of-town shoppers browsing new and pre-owned boats. Manager Daniel Schweitzer, a longtime boater with local family roots, put it plainly at the opening: the marina exists to be part of the community and to offer premium services to visitors and residents alike.

That is true, as far as it goes. But five slips of transient moorage was never going to touch the actual bottleneck facing someone who already owns a boat and needs somewhere to keep it, in the water in July or dry in January. As of last fall, the marina was still working out of seasonal offices while a permanent building was slated for construction sometime in 2026. This was a rental counter and a showroom before it was anything else.

Every Existing Slip In The Valley Was Already Spoken For

The math on moorage here has been tight for a while, and it is worth laying out plainly, because the options rarely get compared side by side.

Facility Slips How you get one
Lakeshore Marina, City of Chelan 100 Phone or online reservation, up to 270 days ahead, no subletting allowed
Sunset Marina 168 Individually owned, rented out only when an owner chooses to list theirs
Manson Bay Marina 32 Manson Park and Recreation District, winter rate $160 a month October through April
Chelan Bay Marina 5 Transient moorage only, built for day and weekend renters

Add it up and the picture is less generous than the headline slip counts suggest. Lakeshore Marina's 100 slips are city-run and reservable, which is straightforward if you plan ahead, but they are moorage, not storage, and they sit empty of your boat the moment lake levels drop and the season ends. Sunset Marina's 168 slips look like the biggest number on the lake, except they are privately owned outright, so "available" really means whichever owners decide to sublet that particular week. Manson Bay Marina, seven miles up the north shore, offers a real winter rate, but it is a 32-slip village marina serving its own side of the lake, not a general answer for someone living in or near downtown Chelan.

None of these were ever going to solve the specific, recurring headache of off-season storage for a boat you already own and don't want to trailer yourself.

What Chelan Bay Marina Actually Fixed, A Year Later

The real announcement came in early August 2026, filed under the marina's own news and announcements category, with none of the fanfare of the 2025 opening. Chelan Bay Marina added a dedicated storage arm, Chelan Boat Storage, with 145 indoor spaces and more than 25 outdoor spaces. The post framed it as timing to secure winter storage, which is accurate, but the detail that matters more is what it removes as a requirement: you no longer need to own or transport a trailer to store your boat here. Off-trailer storage means the marina handles the boat itself.

Layered on top of that is a returning valet service. The marina will pick your boat up from your home or from wherever it's currently moored, transport it to storage, and deliver it back when you're ready for the next season.

"We're not just bringing boats. We're here to be part of the community, to support the local boating lifestyle, and to offer premium services for visitors and residents alike."

That line, from Schweitzer at the July 2025 opening, described the marina's stated intent a year before the storage piece existed. It reads more accurately now than it did then. The rental counter and showroom were the visible half of the plan. The storage lot is the half that actually answers the question longtime owners have been asking.

What This Means If You Own A Boat Here Now

If you already have a boat and have been juggling a trailer, a driveway, or a waitlist for one of the valley's owned slips, this is the first real alternative to show up in a while that doesn't require you to win a lottery or buy into a private marina.

A few practical notes worth knowing before the fall storage rush:

  • Storage reservations tend to fill early each year as boaters plan for the offseason, so calling ahead before October beats waiting until the first cold snap
  • Indoor storage adds protection from winter weather, while outdoor storage is built for boaters who just need a seasonal spot to leave the boat between trips
  • The valet option removes the need to own a trailer entirely, which matters if your boat has lived on a lift or a dock all summer
  • Chelan Bay Marina operates out of 101 Bass Lane, with current hours posted directly through the marina, since staffing and seasonal hours shift between the summer rental season and the fall storage transition

None of this changes the moorage math laid out above. Lakeshore Marina is still the most straightforward public option if you want your boat in the water and reservable in advance. Sunset Marina is still a slip you'd need to buy into or catch through an owner willing to sublet. Manson Bay Marina still serves its own end of the lake best. What changed is that there's finally a place built specifically to take a boat off your hands between seasons, without requiring ownership of a slip or a trailer to make it work.

That's a small, practical shift, but it's the kind of thing that actually changes a resident's fall routine here, not just a visitor's summer afternoon.
